ID Requirements for Notarization in North Carolina

Under North Carolina law, all signers must present satisfactory evidence of identity to the notary. The following unexpired, government-issued photo IDs are acceptable:

Acceptable Forms of Identification

  • Driver’s License (any U.S. state)

  • State-issued ID card (any U.S. state)

  • U.S. Passport

  • U.S. Military ID (without chip)

  • Foreign passport (if written in English or with English translation)

Personal Knowledge and Credible Witness

Under North Carolina law, a notary may notarize a document without requesting ID if the signer is personally known to the notary. This means the notary has had longstanding, direct interaction with the signer and can reliably confirm their identity without question.

 

Personal knowledge must be based on real familiarity and not casual encounters, referrals, or introductions.

 

Unlike some other states, North Carolina does not allow a credible witness to vouch for a signer’s identity unless that credible witness is already personally known to the notary and also personally known to the signer. The notary must believe the credible witness to be a trustworthy person.
